Shams Madina Steel Mill is part of Shams Madina Group — a family of factories in Kandahar producing reinforcement bar, structural sections, nails, metal mesh and copper cable.
01Our story
Built in Kandahar, for Afghanistan.
Shams Madina Steel Mill started production in 1402 (2023) at Shorandam Industrial Park in Kandahar. From the beginning the plan was not a trading yard but a complete works — an induction melt shop, a continuous caster, a reheat furnace and a rolling line, with the laboratories to prove what comes off the end of it.
Since then the group has added a nail and metal-mesh factory in 1403 (2024) under the Kandahar Maham name, a section line for angle iron and flat bar, and a copper wire and cable factory. Each was added for the same reason: a material the country was importing that could be made here to standard.
Today the mill runs two shifts and provides work for around 600 people directly and a further 1,000 indirectly. Its steel is in houses, markets, townships, and government and private projects across Afghanistan.

We consider Shams Madina Steel not a private investment but a national one — tied to the hopes of every Afghan, and answerable for its part in the country's economic growth and self-sufficiency.
We intend to widen our range and deliver it easily to every part of the country, to meet domestic demand for rebar and girder as the leading foundation of Afghanistan's iron industry, and in time to open the way to export.
We regard the extraction of Afghanistan's own iron ore, and investment in it, as a necessity — both for securing our raw material and for the future of the industry.
For us the steel industry is not merely a business. It is a large goal and a clear vision: to help build an industrial, self-sufficient and prosperous Afghanistan.
